Friends of Lopez Hill

-- "The mission of the Friends of Lopez Hill is to protect the 400 acres on Lopez Island known as Lopez Hill, and to preserve and keep it in public ownership for present and future generations."

FRIENDS OF LOPEZ HILL

WHAT HAVE WE ACCOMPLISHED?

WHAT CAN YOU DO TO HELP?

The group members are nearby property owners, bicyclists, horseback riders, hikers and runners, and many others interested in preserving open space on Lopez Island as we face more and more pressure from human development. The members include students of Lopez School - many of whom participate in school sponsored mountain biking and track training activities on Lopez Hill.

We have created a Steering Committee which meets once or twice a month. We are working closely with Bob Myhr of the San Juan County Council, the San Juan County Land Bank, the San Juan Islands Preservation Trust as well as the Mitchell Hill Conservancy and the Dept. of Natural Resources (DNR) and other public and conservation agencies.

STEERING COMMITTEE MEMBERS:

First, in May and June we orchestrated a letter writing campaign to the DNR, invited members of the DNR and state and local legislators to visit Lopez Hill and were instrumental in bringing about a meeting in Friday Harbor with Doug Sutherland, WA State Commisioner of Public Lands and other DNR officials. The result of this meeting was that the DNR acknowledged the great community interest in Lopez Hill, removed the threat of any deal with a land developer, and they agreed to give the county 3 to 4 years to effect a transfer of the land to some public entity.

Second: We have published Mission and Vision Statements to articlulate our goals and help to communicate to the public what we are trying to do.

Third: We have had a table at the Farmer's Market throughout the summer to increase public awareness of Lopez Hill and the issues.

Fourth: we have mapped the trails on Lopez Hill, created a new trail to connect the public access to the existing trails, and published a map of the trails. Download Trail Map (PDF).

Ongoing: we are working with county and state legislators to identify the most appropriate solution to preserve Lopez Hill. More specific details will be provided as this process evolves.

Check our Progress Report for ongoing activities.

Attend any meeting of the Steering Committee: at the Lopez Library (open to anyone). See our home page for next meeting. We ususally meet once or twice a month.
